I beat the old Crawl several times back in my university days, with a
Hill Dwarf Healer, Minotaur Chaos Knight and a Centaur Hunter...
possibly one other combo, I can't remember. This, however, has been my
first win in Stone Soup, and I was using a Mountain Dwarf Fighter. I
very nearly died at the end, as I got a little overconfident on Zot:5
and ended up very low on HP twice - first, fighting a couple of Orb
Guardians that had been berserked by a Moth of Wrath, then by a swarm
of 1's gated in by an ancient lich.

My main reason for posting is to show off the character's equipment.
I've never seen so many great artifact rings in a single game before!
Any one of them would have been a great find in a normal game... as it
was, I did a lot of switching back and forth with them, though for
most of Zot, I kept the combo I was wearing here, which gave me full
fire resistance, double cold, plus all the other critical resists. I
had to sacrifice damage output for that, though... using Traonn and
Zolutwed earlier on, I was really hitting hard.

Never did find a better weapon than my close-to-maximally-enchanted
broad axe of chopping though. It was very late in the game that I got
a decent artifact armor, too... up till then, I'd been wearing a +7
plate mail of magic resistance.

Anyway... glad I won. Would have been very embarrassing to fail to win
with that equipment!

That's quite a good haul for a 4-rune run. Shame you didn't try for
some of the other branches, as they would've been useful there, but I
guess you didn't want to risk the loss? Your shield is also quite good
and compliments those rings well (none of which have rPois or rElec!)

I don't know about older versions of crawl, but I find that jewellery
shuffling is pretty essential to most games in DCSS.

Unfortunately the amulet of Resist Bad Decisions has yet to be
implemented.

Yeah, exactly. There was also a Ziggurat down near the bottom of the
dungeon, and I had the cash to go in, since I've never tried one
before... but I decided that just getting the win was top priority. I
think if I have a strong game with a spellcaster, now, I'll likewise
just go for the safest win I can... but with another tank-type
character, I might try to do one of the branches of Hell, at least, or
go partway into a Ziggurat, if there is one.

And yeah, the arty shield was sweet. I got it quite late in the game
(with my carnivorous mutation, I didn't have food problems, so I
hadn't bothered with the Hive until just before going to Zot)... had
just been using a +2 shield of poison resistance up until then.
