Discussion:
Seeking a mid-90s fully graphical Roque-like/NetHack-like game for Windows
(too old to reply)

I'm searching for a game I had on my Windows (3.1) PC about 10 years
ago which I downloaded either from the web or from some BBS; I'm
hoping someone can help me to find it again.

It was a Roque-like/NetHack-like game but it was completely graphical
(256 color VGA style) for Windows. It presented, as I recall, a
completely overhead tile-based view (think the original Legend of
Zelda or Dragon Warrior) and before you could begin your quest you
had to go around in your home town collecting items like food and
potions, weapons and armor. It was a very colorful game -- as I
recall potions were shown on the map as a large blue bottle, etc.)
and there were ladders and stairs that you walked on to go up and
down floors.

I know there's probably ten dozen games which match this description
-- the important things are that it was roughly 10 years ago (1996-
ish) and was available at that time for Windows 3.1, so anything
newer and OpenGL or DirectX based is right out.

Many thanks in advance.

Sounds like it could be Ragnarok. That was a good game, the first
roguelike I played if I remember right.

Indeed, it does sound like Ragnarok. That was a fun game, might have to
DL it again. I remember the krakens in that game being ridiculously
powerful. They could easily knock down a character to -10,000 HP in one
attack.

I can't remember any krakens, but there was a sea creature called
'lorkesth' or something like that which was incredibly powerful.

The game was quite abuseable too - playing as a sage and switching
bodies with a draugr gave a character a speed of 6x normal, and you
could still use all armor and weapons.

Thanks for the suggestion, but based on the screenshot I found at
http://www.tripalot.com/roguelike/review.htm, I would say it is NOT
Ragnarok. They have one game (Rogue's Quest) which they go into great
detail in saying "looks great" and was built natively for Windows, but
then they don't show a screenshot of it. I'll bet that was the one.
Thanks again everyone.

Here it is. Looks like it works after I played around with it a bit.
